SCALLYWAGS FOR PUPPIESHomestart For PuppiesBecause prevention is better than cure it is essential to start off on the right foot with your new puppy as soon as you acquire him. Homestart will help you do this. A Scallywags instructor will visit you at home and give advice on how to develop a good relationship with your puppy by understanding how he thinks and learns. Advice on toilet training, grooming, chewing, puppy biting and excitability are all included within the visit. We will also help you to understand how to start off basic puppy training and socialisation. Because this is a home based service it is ideal for very young puppies that have not yet had their first vaccination but it is also available for older puppies or a new adult dog in the home. This is not intended for dogs that already have developed problems. Puppy ClassBetween 8 & 12 weeks is a period in the dog's development when all new experiences will have a maximum and long-lasting effect on the dogs future disposition. This is also the best time to start basic training. Walking on a loose lead, coming when called, standing still to be groomed etc. are much easier to teach to a dog that has never pulled, run off, or enjoyed a wrestling match with a brush-wielding owner! Here, puppies are learning to be attentive to you whilst in the company of other dogs. Romping with other pups is not encouraged at class. Your puppy course also includes one puppy romp and an exclusive one to one lesson at our field/head office in Shedfield.
PUPPY CLASS AVAILABILITYup to date at 26th April
Because off lead interaction and play with other dogs is essential in developing doggy social skills and off lead exercise is a huge benefit to your dog, puppy romps are held on Saturday mornings at our head office and outside training venue at Shedfield. Scallywags instructors and their sociable adult dogs will join a group of puppies and owners for an hours play and dog-watching in our fully enclosed 5 acre field. ![]() ![]() ![]() For up to date information and time for the puppy romp please check out our NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS on the Forum Puppy One to One lessonsAll dogs need to be able to socialise with other dogs and people on their daily walks whilst remaining responsive to their owner. Dogs that do not come when called are rarely let off lead. This can lead to frustration and possible problem behaviour in the long term. In order to give owners the confidence to let puppy off lead, a private lesson, by appointment is included in your puppy course. Whilst we are teaching puppy to follow us and come when called we can also chat about and hopefully help you with any other aspects of puppy's training.SCALLYWAGS FOR PROBLEM SOLVINGTraining & Behaviour ProblemsTRAINING & BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS such as pulling on lead, not coming when called, house soiling, anxiety related problems or aggression can be more effectively dealt with in an outside environment or in your own home, with expert help and support from a Scallywags behaviour counsellor. If you are experiencing problems with your dog then we can arrange a one-to-one session, or a series of private lessons with you and your dog. We can come to you if you wish or these can take place at our excellent outside training facilities at Shedfield. Assessments - Behaviour ProblemsThe Scallywags behaviourists and their dogs are especially experienced in working with dogs with aggression problems. Aggressive behaviour is more common than many people realise and is often made worse by incorrect handling of the problem. On a one to one basis we can teach you how to read and react to your dog, helping him to learn new, more appropriate behaviour. Private lessonsIf you have a specific problem or just have one or two things you would like to work on then please call the office to book an appointment for a lesson. For some problems we may suggest an assessment, where we will meet you and your dog to observe the problem behaviour and discuss your training requirements. Adult Social Groups
For adult dogs that need to socialise but may lack the necessary skills
to do it well in the big wide world. Dogs that are overcoming their initial shyness or
nervousness are encouraged to attend these groups as the next stage
in their rehabilitation. They will be helped by the Scallywags dogs
and some of the 'puppy romp graduates'.
Advanced Puppy ClassThis 7 week course is for puppies that have completed their 7 weeks in the puppy class where they can continue with and expand on their training. Companion Class

Agility TrainingAgility classes are held at Shedfield on Saturdays all year and most evenings in the summer. Additionally private lessons and one to one coaching are available by appointment. In the Oxfordshire area classes are held at Thame in the summer and Bledlow Ridge in the winter. ![]() ![]() Beginners agility is for dogs and handlers to learn how to negotiate all the obstacles in an agility course and understand the control exercises needed for Agility (turning right and left, going ahead, waiting when asked etc). This is for people who want to do Agility just for fun as well as those who may like to go on to competitions. Group training is held on Saturdays and private lessons are available to help you and your dog reach a standard where your dog is confident and controlled enough to work in the next, more advanced class. Spectators are always welcome. BEGINNERS AGILITY COURSES AT SHEDFIELD
